Understanding Holiday Pay in the Netherlands

Hey, there! If you’re an international student in the Netherlands and have started working, you may have heard murmurs about something called “holiday pay.” Let’s break it down so you can understand what it is, how it works, and—most importantly—how you can ensure you receive it!

What is Holiday Pay?

In the Netherlands, holiday pay (or “vakantiegeld”) is a welcome income boost that employees receive once a year, usually in May. This is not simply extra money; it is a legal right! The goal is to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy their vacation without financial constraints.

How much will I get?

The typical holiday pay rate is at least 8% of your total annual wage. So, if you earn €20,000 per year from a part-time work or internship, your holiday compensation will be approximately €1,600. Not so awful, right?

Am I entitled to Holiday Pay?

Almost everyone who works in the Netherlands, including employed overseas students, is eligible to holiday pay. It doesn’t matter if you work part-time while studying or if you have a temporary job; if you have a contract, you’re likely covered.

How does Holiday Pay Work?

Assume you’re working at a café near campus. You signed a one-year contract and your monthly compensation is €500. By May, you’ll have worked there for eight months and earned a total of €4,000. Your holiday pay would be 8% of that, or €320—a wonderful chunk of coin to fuel your summer travels or simply help with the bills!

When and How?

Holiday money is often paid out once a year in May, just in time for the summer. Some companies may choose to disperse it in June or with another month’s compensation if otherwise agreed upon in your contract. It is normally paid out in one big sum, so expect a larger than usual salary during payout month.

What Happens if I don't receive my Holiday Pay?

If May has passed and you haven’t received your holiday money, check your payslip first; it should be recorded there. If not, the next step is to speak with your HR department or company. Remember, this is your right, not a bonus or reward, so don’t be afraid to ask.

What Happens if I don't receive my Holiday Pay?

Check Your Contract: When you sign your employment contract, search for the section on holiday pay to find out how much and when you will be paid

Budget Wisely: Knowing that you will receive holiday pay might help you arrange your finances, potentially allowing you to splurge on travel or other pleasures.

Keep Records: Keep your pay stubs and other job papers in case there is a problem with your holiday compensation.

Holiday pay is an excellent advantage that can significantly improve your capacity to take time off and visit the Netherlands or elsewhere. So, make sure you understand your rights and make full use of this benefit. After all, everyone deserves a break, and having a little extra money makes those breaks more delightful!
