How to Get Rent Benefit in the Netherlands (Huurtoeslag)

Greetings, International Trailblazers!  Today, we’re here to disentangle the web of Dutch bureaucracy, notably the interesting thread of Housing Benefits, also known as ‘Huurtoeslag’ (*drumroll please*). First and foremost, congratulations on making it to the Netherlands, country of canals, cheese, tulips, and, yes, Rent Benefit (Huurtoeslag). Buckle up, because we’re about to dive into the realm of rental costs, Dutch policies, and how to make your stay in this wonderful country a little more affordable.

 

What is Rent Benefit?

Housing Benefits, also known as Huurtoeslag, is a rent subsidy the Dutch government offers to help you cover your rental costs. This benefit is extremely helpful for students as it will cover some of the costs for your rent. 

Am I Eligible for the Rent Benefit?

Do you have any questions about eligibility? You are eligible for housing allowance, provided you meet the following requirements:

  • You must be at least eighteen.

  • You legally reside in The Netherlands (the library does not count as legal residence).

  • Your rented home contains a separate bedroom, kitchen, and toilet (it is an independent unit).

  • Your annual income, savings, and rent do not exceed the limit imposed by Dutch tax authorities.

How to Apply

Already checked off the boxes? Brilliant! You’re undoubtedly asking how to apply for this benefit. Take these steps:

  • Go to the Belastingdienst website and click on the’mijn toeslagen’ tab.

  • Enter DigiD to access the system.

  • Fill out the details, and you’re done!
