FAQ

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers.

Do I need a work permit during my orientation year?

No. If you have a valid orientation year residence permit, you are free to work in the Netherlands. Your employer does not need to apply for a TWV for you.

How many hours can I work on a search year visa?

There is no specific immigration-related limit on the number of hours you can work during your orientation year. You can work part-time or full-time while searching for your next career opportunity.

What documents do I need to start working?

You should have a valid identification document, BSN and your valid orientation year residence permit showing that you are free to work. During onboarding, you may be asked for additional information needed for your employment contract and salary payments.

Can I work outside my field of study during my orientation year?

Yes. Your orientation year residence permit allows you to work freely while you search for a long-term opportunity. This means you can take a temporary or flexible job to support yourself financially while looking for a role related to your studies.

Does an employer need to sponsor me during my orientation year?

No. During the orientation year, employers do not need to sponsor you or obtain a work permit for you. If you later want to stay in the Netherlands after your orientation year expires, you may need to switch to another residence permit.

Can I work for Brave Ones while looking for a study-related job?

Yes. This is exactly why Brave Ones offers opportunities for search year graduates. A flexible job can help you earn an income while giving you time to continue applying for a position related to your studies and long-term career.

What happens when my orientation year residence permit expires?

The orientation year is temporary. If you want to continue living and working in the Netherlands afterwards, you need to qualify for another residence permit before your current permit expires. For example, you may be able to switch to a highly skilled migrant permit if you find a qualifying job.
