4 Cycling Fines to Avoid in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands cycling is really popular. There are even more bikes than people. Read the following post in order to remind yourself of some basic rules. Stick to them and do not get a fine.

Bike lights

The most common mistake is probably cycling without bike lights. You have to have a white light in the front and a red one in the back. If your bikes doesn't have lights or they are broken, you can buy them at stores like HEMA for a few euros.

Phone

It is completely forbidden to use your phone while cycling. As soon as you get caught holding your phone while riding the bike you have to pay around 150€. Always keep your phone in your bag, pocket or phone holder. It is allowed to use headphones though.

Intoxicated

Don't drive intoxicated. The consumption alcohol or other drugs before cycling is not only a danger for yourself but also for the surroundings. Even though a small amount of alcohol consumption before riding a bike is allowed, we recommend alternatives. Think about whether you can walk or take the bus for example.

Basic traffic rules

Try to stick to the traffic rules as good as possible. Examples are not running a red light or turning without indicating the direction with your arm. Every violation could potentially lead to a fine. If you're not sure about some rules, just look them up online.

We hope you have save bike rides throughout the Netherlands without risking fines! For tips on how to save money in the Netherlands read our blog post.
