How to save money: hacks for international students in the Netherlands

Students are often known for being able to spend little money per month. In order to save money in several ways, we put together a list of places and online options. Some tips are specific for the Netherlands and therefore maybe new for you.

Books

By your books from other students or borrow them from the library. Often you can find books in WhatsApp group chats or while talking to students from higher levels. Sometimes you will also find out that not every book originally listed is necessary. So maybe wait until university hast started.

Clothes

Nijmegen has great second hand stores to offer. Sometimes vintage sales or clothes swapes take place. You can find them organised at the university or as Facebook events. As an app we would recommend Vinted to find clothes. You can not only purchase, but also sell your clothes there.

Knaek

Knaek gives students the chance to save money in several stores and restaurants throughout the Netherlands. They have cooperations with many different places and by using the app you can get discounts and cash back. Often it is helpful to use it with friends when it comes to 1 + 1 for free offers.

Bikes

Second hand bikes can be purchased mainly online. The app Marktplaats is helpful. You can also check Facebook Marketplace or WhatsApp groups like the one we mentioned before. If you only need a bike for a few months Swapfiets might be an option for you. You can rent their bikes for a monthly fee.

Free items

If you are searching for free items Marktplaats or Facebook Market place are your place to be. Sometimes Facebook also has groups where people put free items online. For a better orientation ‘’gratis’’ means ‘’for free’’ in Dutch.

We wish you all the best luck in saving money with our tips. In case you are searching for a job that fits your student life, read our blog post about what you should know as an international student.
