Big student associations often have an application date in the beginning of the academic year. After that you sometimes have to attend a weekend or a week full of activities and often sleeping in a tent to become an official member.

It is easier to sign up for smaller student organisations or study organisations in the Netherlands. You can mostly find a sign up form on their website, pay a small fee and then you are ready to take part in various activities.
