What to pack for the Netherlands

Packing for at least half a year abroad can be a challenge. But fear not! We’ve got your back with our must-haves and advice in this blog post. We hope to make your packing faster and help you avoid forgetting something crucial. For a better overview, we’ve categorized everything into six neat sections. Let’s dive in!

Documents

Remember that scene in spy movies where the protagonist has secret documents hidden everywhere? Be that spy! Print your housing contract and other important documents like your passport. Having backups is key in case something gets stolen or lost. Check if you need a visa (don’t be that person who finds out too late). Stash copies in different pieces of luggage or even a belt bag for good measure.

Toiletry

No need to pack the bathroom sink! Bring small amounts of shampoo, shower gel, and toothpaste – you can easily buy more once you arrive. Don’t forget your electronic toothbrush charger; a dead toothbrush is just a sad, fancy stick. Pack essentials like a hairbrush and razor, too.

Clothes

The Dutch weather is as moody as a teenager. Pack for all seasons – yes, even summer can feel like winter on some days. Thermal clothes are your new best friends. Basics are a must: underwear, shirts, pants, jackets, and comfy clothes. Depending on your field of study, you might need something fancy like a blazer. Most importantly, a rain jacket and umbrella are non-negotiable. Seriously, it rains. A lot.

Gadgets

If you have a long trip, we recommend getting a portable charger. If you are from outside the EU, you should have an EU charger adapter with you. It will make charging your devises possible. For the Netherlands simple bike lights, a good bike lock as well as a portable bike pump are nice to have. If you know someone with an OV public transport card that is not expired ask them to give it to you. You will be able to save money on the public transport with it.

University

Your favorite notebook and pens will feel like a piece of home. Wait until you’re in the Netherlands to buy textbooks – you can often get them second-hand or borrow them. Don’t forget your laptop and/or iPad. If your student card was sent to your home, pack it! Showing up without it would be a rookie mistake.

Nice to have

Vacuum bags or packing cubes are packing hacks if you’re short on space. Bring some food or sweets from home – your new friends will love you for it. Decorating your room with printed photos of loved ones can chase away homesickness. Consider packing some basic kitchen items if you can fit them. If not, you can easily find what you need in the city centre or second-hand in student housing.
