What are the challenges of uni life in the Netherlands?

What are challenges you can face during uni life? Can you identify with them? Or are you getting prepared to move abroad for your studies? In this Brewing Student Cultures podcast episode Sanjana gives us a great insight in her experiences moving from India to the Netherlands to study.

Starting a new life

Moving to another country can almost feel like starting a new life. You most certainly barely know anyone and will therefore be anonymous. Nonetheless, with time you will find yourself building connections in the Netherlands and finding your own way of living.

Homesickness while studying abroad

Sanjana described her feeling of not fitting in the new country and not fitting in at home. It can feel like an identity crisis, especially when you realise that the life of your loved ones at home keeps on moving forward without you.

Mental health

Moving to a new country entails adapting to a different culture, educational system, language and social environment, which might be overwhelming. All the changes can have an impact on your mental health. If you feel like you need support, many universities offer professional help free of charge.

Prepare yourself before moving

Before moving to the Netherlands or any other country, it important to know what you are getting yourself into. Think about aspects like: Where will you be able to work with your major? What is a typical lifestyle of people living in the country? Or what supermarkets and stores are the cheapest?
