An International Student's Guide to Celebrating Halloween in the Netherlands

Greetings, ghost, ghouls and international students! As Halloween creeps around the corner, it’s time to uncover the Dutch take on this ghostly holiday. Whether you’re here for a semester or the long haul, you’ll want to experience Halloween the Dutch way. It’s like Halloween, but with a sprinkle of Dutch quirkiness. So, grab your lantern, or better yet, a pumpkin, your costume (a bedsheet is not a costume) and let’s dive into the stange world of Halloween in the Netherlands.

Trick or Treat, Dutch-Style: Sint Maarten

Let’s start with the Dutch version of “trick or treat.” They call it “Sint Maarten,” and it’s like a mini adventure for candy. On November 11th, kids roam the neighborhoods, carrying lanterns crafted from sugar beets or turnips (Yes, you read that right!). They sing catchy songs and, here’s the best part, they get treats from friendly neighbors. No tricks, just sweet Dutch hospitality. Trick or treating on Halloween night is not common,  so if you plan on wandering the streets in search of treats be careful.

Halloween Amsterdam: Spook-tacular Fun

Now, you mustn’t miss the fiesta of fright known as “Halloween Amsterdam.” The city gets a ghostly makeover for a whole week or so, and it’s quite the spectacle. The Amsterdam Dungeon cranks up the scare-o-meter to offer a spine-tingling experience. Clubs and bars host wild parties where costumes range from ‘adorably spooky’ to ‘hide-under-the-bed scary.’ Don’t forget the Zombie Walk, where the streets are alive with the undead. It’s an experience to die for—figuratively, of course. If you’re in the mood for a party then make sure to check out the 14th edition of the Amsterdam Halloween Party, this years theme is Super Villains and it’s taking place on the 28th of October

Walibi Fright Night: A Heart-Pounding Extravaganza

For thrill-seekers, Walibi Holland’s “Fright Night” is a wickedly good choice. This amusement park in Biddinghuizen becomes a lair of pure terror. Expect haunted houses, scare zones, and rides in the dark. If you’re not screaming, you’re doing it wrong. The attention to detail and immersive scares will give you goosebumps that might last until Sint Maarten!

Halloween Nights at Toverland: Magic and Mystery

If you’re not into screaming your heart out (can’t say I blame you), Toverland in Sevenum offers a delightful, family-friendly Halloween experience. The park transforms with enchanting decorations, and staff members dress in spellbinding costumes. You can enjoy shows, parades, and kid-friendly haunted houses. It’s like stepping into a Halloween fairy tale, perfect for those who prefer giggles over screaming their heads off.

In a nutshell, Halloween in the Netherlands is a bewitching blend of tradition and modern thrill. From sweet Sint Maarten adventures to Walibi’s hair-raising scares and Toverland’s family-friendly enchantment, there’s something for everyone. Get ready to “Hallo-welcome to Halloween!” So, whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned ghost hunter, the Netherlands has the perfect Halloween celebration for you. Prepare for spooky surprises and Dutch delights and let the Halloween adventure begin!
