5 Things to Do in Autumn in the Netherlands

It’s officially brown leaves and pumpkin spiced latte season. Are you ready for some Autumn activities. Let’s Dive into this magical season filled with pumpkin carving, apple picking, picturesque parks, and delightful Dutch islands.

1. Carve Some Pumpkins

Embrace your creative side by carving pumpkins! You can find pumpkins at local markets and supermarkets; you can even find a local pumpkin patch near you. Gather your friends, pick up some carving tools, and let your inner Van Gogh shine.

2. Apple Picking

Who needs a grocery store when you can pick apples right off the tree? It’s like being a contestant on the greatest Dutch reality program, “Survivor: Apple Orchard Edition.” You get extra points if you unleash your inner Tarzan while plucking them from branches. One such orchard that offers this is the De Olmenhorst.

Don’t go picking apples or pumpkins from random places, and make sure it’s not private property.

3. De Hoge Veluwe

Now, if you’re looking for a place where even the leaves blush with Dutch modesty, De Hoge Veluwe National Park is the spot. It is a natural wonderland, especially in autumn. You can explore this stunning park on foot or rent a bike to cover more ground.

4. Hikes Galore

I for one do not like walking, running, or jogging but if hiking is more your style, the Netherlands boasts numerous hiking trails that come alive with autumn colours. The Elfstenpad and Utrechtse Heuvelrug offer some nice hiking trails, just make sure to look up the trail fist we wouldn’t getting lost.

5. Dutch Islands

Consider visiting the Dutch islands in October for an unforgettable experience. Texel, Terschelling, and Ameland are especially lovely in the autumn. Explore their charming villages and stunning coastlines. Make sure to check whether and what time the ferries are operating.

Bonus: Dutch Autumn Food

If you really want to embrace the Dutch Culture then let’s not forget the culinary delicacies that emerge during this season. “Stamppot” and apple pie are two meals that are synonymous with Dutch autumn warmth. Consider a warm, hearty stamppot, in which potatoes and seasonal vegetables like kale or sauerkraut combine in a cozy mix, often complemented by a delicious smoked sausage—a quintessential Dutch staple.

Then there’s Dutch apple pie, or “appeltaart,” with layers of cinnamon-spiced apples, raisins, and a hint of lemon zest topped with a dollop of freshly whipped cream. These recipes are ideal for embracing the pleasant aromas of autumn while exploring the colourful seasonal attractions of the Netherlands.

So, fellow adventurers, there you have it! Autumn in the Netherlands is an artistic event full of pumpkin Picasso-ing, tree-top apple treasure hunts, enchanting park adventures, and island exploits that will make every gnome and fairy in the land jealous. So collect your fellow adventurers, put on your raincoat, and prepare to dance with the Dutch fall.
